Safeguarding is the range of measures to protect people within an organisation, or those they come into contact with, from abuse and maltreatment of any kind.
This course introduces:
- the legal duties of voluntary organisations
- how to actively prevent harm
- how to identify and respond effectively to people experiencing harm.
Outcomes
By the end of the training, you'll:
- understand current safeguarding law and policy in England, including the main safeguarding duties to: staff, volunteers, children and adults at risk of harm, others in contact with your organisation.
- understand different types of harm and how to spot signs of abuse
- know how to effectively manage concerns and allegations
- be able to implement safer working practices for your organisation which embed safeguarding practices.
This course is for charity staff or volunteers responsible for safeguarding and those who would like to learn more. This may include charity leaders such as chief executives, directors, or volunteer managers.
Who should attend?
The course is a helpful introduction for those new to designated safeguarding lead roles. You should attend this course or an equivalent course before attending our designated safeguarding leads in charities training course.
This course is specifically for organisations working with the public at large. You may require additional training if your organisation:
- does intentional, direct work with children. For example, early years, children’s centres or youth work
- works with adults at risk. For example, adult social care or clinical settings.
This course is a useful overview for staff and volunteers in international development charities. It is not suitable for staff or volunteers working in humanitarian or development settings outside the UK.
Who delivers the training?
Tom Burke is an NCVO associate with extensive experience leading safeguarding and child protection training for voluntary organisations. He is UK regional advisor for the Funder Safeguarding Collaborative and has led research into the role of safeguarding leads in the voluntary sector.
He previously led the development of the NCVO’s safeguarding help and guidance for charities and was technical advisor on our safeguarding guidance for trustees.
