Bath Abbey

Bath Abbey

Brief Description of Organisation

Located in the heart of the city, Bath Abbey is the iconic centre of Christian worship among over fifty churches in the city and surrounding villages. The Abbey has a congregation of over 400 and plays an important civic role in the city as well as welcoming up to 500,000 visitors a year.

Full Description of Organisation

The Abbey heritage goes back to its foundation as a medieval monastery. The traditions of Christian hospitality, worship and service have been maintained across over 1300 years. Recent developments of the Abbey’s buildings have created facilities which are welcoming, accessible, warm and flexible.

The Abbey has a formal education programme working in partnership with local schools and Christian families who worship at the Abbey and an informal education programme working with visiting families and young people.

The Abbey’s five choirs welcome all ages and are the backbone of the choral music which is the mainstay of the Abbey’s worship and concert programme. A purpose built song school provides a base for the Abbey’s choirs and visiting choirs.

Over 300 volunteers work at the Abbey, from provision of support to Sunday services to stewarding on the floor of the Abbey during visiting hours, there are always new opportunities opening up.

The Abbey is pleased to work with partner organisations in the city who share a common vision for serving those who are disadvantaged, for education and learning, for marking significant moments in the city’s life and for prayer and worship.
