The Museum tells the stories of the working life of Bath - working people's lives and trades, skills, businesses, shops, and manufacturers. Visit Website Full Description of Organisation The Museum of Bath at Work is the city’s museum of working life and local and social history – the workplaces, factories, shops, trades and industries, and the people who worked in them. Through the programme of permanent displays, temporary exhibitions and community projects, we have explored subjects such as the development of Council housing in Bath; public health and sanitation; coal smoke pollution; and the impact of 19th industrialisation. We believe that there is a need to tell, and an appetite for, this ‘real Bath’ story – people love to see how familiar jobs have changed (office administration from hand-written ledgers to computers) and also to recognise things that they remember from childhood or from their grandparents. 'Belay' is a climbing-specific term, where the climber is secured by a rope to the 'belayer' to increase safety and prevent injury. Somer Valley Foodbank Brief Description of Organisation We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. We are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK. Visit Website Full Description of Organisation We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. We are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK. The Somer Valley Foodbank is run in partnership with local churches facilitated by St John’s Church, Church Road, Peasedown St John. The Somer Valley Foodbank is designed to help individuals and families in crisis through the provision of emergency food supplies. Local care professionals in the Somer Valley area refer people, with a food voucher, to the foodbank centre where they are given their food supplies, a cup of coffee and help in finding other professionals who can help them out of their crisis. The foodbank gives the general public an opportunity to contribute to and support local well-being in a simple practical way. The Foodbank operates within a five mile radius of the centre of Midsomer Norton. Providing emergency food to people in crisis. Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. A simple box of food makes a big difference, with foodbanks helping prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems. FOOD IS DONATED - Schools, churches, businesses and individuals donate non-perishable, in-date food to a foodbank. Large collections often take place as part of Harvest Festival celebrations and food is also collected at supermarkets. FOOD IS SORTED AND STORED - Volunteers sort food to check that it’s in date and pack it into boxes ready to be given to people in need. Over 40,000 people give up their time to volunteer at foodbanks. PROFESSIONALS IDENTIFY PEOPLE IN NEED - Foodbanks partner with a wide range of care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers and police to identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher. CLIENTS RECEIVE FOOD - Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days’ emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a warm drink or free hot meal and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem. Our foodbank is part of The Trussell Trust’s network of 428 foodbanks, working to tackle food poverty and hunger in our local communities, as well as across the UK. The Foodbank Network was founded in 2004 after four years of developing the original foodbank based in Salisbury. Since then The Trussell Trust has helped communities work together to launch foodbanks nationwide in a wide range of towns and cities. In 2020/21, The Trussell Trust’s Foodbank Network provided 2,537,198 three-day emergency food supplies and support to UK people in crisis. Of these, 980,082 went to children. As a network, we want to see more people helped out of crisis and fewer people needing foodbanks in the future. That’s why The Trussell Trust and local foodbanks are working together to develop new ways to help people out of crisis through programmes like More Than Food. - The Bird of Prey Project | 3sg.org.uk
The Bird of Prey Project Brief Description of Organisation We are a registered charity set up to protect wild birds of prey and their habitats through nature recovery, community education and research. Our conservation ethos concerns the protection of local habitats, declining species and raising awareness of wild species and how they interact in an environment. We are also committed to raising the standard for raptor welfare in the UK, and ending cruelty. Visit Website Full Description of Organisation Our Mission at The Bird of Prey Project is to monitor and conserve wild birds of prey; inspire a passion for wildlife and its protection to varied communities and promote high standards for modern raptor welfare. Our charitable objectives are predominately funded by our multiple award winning visitor centre, where nature-based learning for all is at the core of what we believe in. From inspiring daily flying displays with a focus on the native species of raptor we can protect from our doorstep, to face to face handling experiences with our birds – we work to inspire a passion for wildlife that for some may not be found in a book or TV documentary. Home to just over 20 resident birds, our senior keepers and bird team volunteers work hard every day to provide the highest quality of life, modelling and building a new system of modern day welfare which we hope will lead to supporting new national guidance for raptor care in captivity in years to come. Nature recovery begins with education, and engaging diverse communities with wildlife and the small changes we can make to protect species and ecosystems for years to come is hugely important to our mission. We believe in making education accessible – through sensory, immersive experience, outdoor nature-based learning and face to face inspiration. Children’s conservation workshops, school practical visits, remote learning through zoom with the owls and specialised visits for adults and young people with additional needs make up some of our work. Our Cavity nesting species programme operates in our local region around Bath and surrounding areas, through which we partner with land managers and farmers to protect and restore the ancient British Grassland that some of our amber listed species such as Tawny Owls and European Kestrels depend on. Through this programme we also install and monitor nest boxes where applicable, providing new safe nesting habitats in areas where traditional ancient hollow oak trees may have been removed. The Rehabilitation Hospital is a specialist wild raptor care referral unit part of our site here at The Project, and we advise many cases of wild raptor rehabilitation throughout the UK, providing high level care and integration back to the wild where possible. Through this line of work the charity also operates multiple research projects, including studies into toxin presence in wild birds of prey and the effect of Biomagnification on the wider ecosystem. Visit Website Full Description of Organisation Sporting Family Change (SFC) is a needs-led charity, founded in 2014 working with communities across Bath and North-East Somerset. We use sport to empower, inspire and motivate local families. We adopt a fully inclusive approach working alongside the whole family, offering fun sports and healthy activities to improve fitness and build confidence. This helps inspire and motivate the whole family, encouraging them to raise their aspirations and make positive long-term lifestyle changes. Changes may appear to be very small, but for many of the families these are often hugely significant. We believe the best way to support and empower local families is to build their trust in us, build relationships and as a result a sense of belonging. Ensuring that everyone feels genuinely valued for their contribution is key to all our activities. To achieve this, we offer a flexible, caring, solutions-focused approach when engaging with families and provide a wide range of tailor-made programs including our Whole Based Mentoring, the H.O.P.E. Programme (Health Opportunities through Physical Education) and our social activities program for young adults with learning disabilities. Mr Damian Knollys, Headteacher Peasedown St John Primary School, says: “Every supported child in our school looks forward to their weekly session with SFC. Why? I would say it’s because children are treated as individuals, valued for who they are and challenged to step outside their comfort zone in a safe, supported way. They are encouraged to succeed in ways they never believed they could and taught how to fail and learn from their failures without beating themselves up. It’s an exercise in gently teaching children how to love themselves and love life.” Sporting Family Change Foundation Brief Description of Organisation Sporting Family Change (SFC) is a needs-led charity, founded in 2014 working with communities across Bath and North-East Somerset. Vision Voices for Life’s vision is for every child, no matter who they are or where they live, to have the opportunity to have fun singing together, experiencing emotional expression through music and helping them to be happy, build confidence and develop in all aspects of their life, musically and beyond. We provide high-quality specialised creative and unique music, singing and confidence coaching programmes for primary school aged children. We know that music is vital for our personal well-being and will raise awareness of the positive impact it can have on children’s mental health. Bath Ethnic Minority Sr. Citizens Assoc. Brief Description of Organisation Supporting older members from ethnic minority groups across Bath and North East Somerset Visit Website Full Description of Organisation BEMSCA was established in September 1993 initially to provide a luncheon club service for older members of the Caribbean, Asian and Chinese communities within Bath and North East Somerset. BEMSCA offers space where older people can meet and socialise with people from a similar ethnic background to themselves. They can also access advice and information on a broad range of health, housing and welfare issues which can be a lifeline to communities who do not speak English as their first language. Why the community needs us We run a day care centre and outreach programme which supports members who are unable to leave their home because of their health or disability. Through the employment of two part time project workers plus a team of volunteers, we work with representatives across a broad range of services including banks, utility services, healthcare, legal advice and support to ensure members can make informed decisions about issues that affect their quality of life. Our impact on the community BEMSCA services over 190 members and their families to ensure that the needs of the BME community have been considered. Demand on our services is very high and we are looking to develop work across a broad range of ethnic groups. Bath Ethnic Minority Sr. Citizens Assoc.
